United Nations Special Report on Orissa Super Cyclone

Education

Thousands of school buildings have been damaged in the state. The damage to the buildings has been categorised as follows:

1)  Partially damaged

2)  Completely damaged

3)  Washed away

The damaged buildings have resulted in damage to furniture, vessels and disruption of government’s mid-day meal schemes. However, that has not prevented most children from attending classes. UNICEF with DFID funds has supplied textbooks printed by the government of Orissa to schools. The textbooks are part of the book bank scheme of the schools.

Teachers’ kits and designing child friendly schools are proposed to be part of the rehabilitation activity.

As one child said, "Our house is completely broken. My father and uncle have made small rooms and we sleep in turns for a few hours as not all can be accommodated in the room." These illustrates the fate of these children. Sleeping in turns, sharing classrooms, going hungry still able to smile.
