The UN
Resident Coordinator is responsible for integration and coordination of UN development
efforts at the country level and for ensuring that the main thrust of the UN's joint
social development effort is geared towards the follow-up to the UN Conferences aimed at
poverty alleviation through sustainable, people centered development. In this effort, the
UN System in India is working together with the Government to support country-defined
priorities and action plans, also in association with Civil Society, Bilateral Organisations and other Development Partners.
A
strong focus of the Resident Coordinator's current activities lies in facilitating and
promoting the United Nation's Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) process, as India
is one of the 18 pilot countries in this initiative. The Resident Coordinator System is
also leading the 10 Inter-Agency Working Groups on Primary Education, HIV/AIDS,
Child Labour, Gender, Disaster Management Team (DMT), Education, Population and
Development, Water and Environmental Sanitation, Food Security & Nutrition and a
Common UN Database. Another important platform for fostering Development Assistance
Cooperation in India are the Multi-Bilateral Development Partnership Initiatives on
different cross-cutting areas of social development concerns.
