Women in Tsunami

In the southern Indian State of Kerala one million people were affected by the Tsunami. 177 people died. One of the worst affected districts in the State was Kollam. Here 139 people were taken by the waves, and more than 10,000 were displaced. To help the affected people to overcome long lasting impacts after the disaster, ILO has started “Fast Track Alternative Livelihood Projects” in this district. In collaboration with local NGOs, so far about 300 people have benefited from training programmes, which should open up new employment opportunities for them.
